Film Trailer: Multimodel Texts

There are multiple features of multimodal texts that are used within film trailers to provoke an array of emotions and thoughts and also to aid the display of the films USP or overall message.
Features of Multimodal Texts
1. Written text on screen.
2. Spoken Language.
3. Moving Images.
4. Sound Effects.
5. Music.

1. Written text on screen
Black Mass 2015

'Black Mass' displays written text on screen which is used to show the audience the films USP which is evidently the story 'of one of the most notorious gangsters in U.S. history'. This narrows it down for the audience as it is clear that the film is crime and gang related but it would be easy for the audience to assume that the film is purely fictional but instead it is based on somebody real.

2. Spoken Language
True Story 2015

'True Story' includes a very powerful phrase following the culmination of the trailer at 2.19. The central protagonist played by Jonah Hill asks the apparent central antagonist, 'Chris, did you do what you're accused of doing' where the trailer ends with no response. This makes the audience question what the actual answer is so that they have an incentive to go and see the film.

3. Moving Images
I'm Not Ashamed 2016

'I'm Not Ashamed' includes original news footage from the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 which helps make the films USP evident. The moving images also accurately depict the exterior of the real Columbine High School which provokes feelings of empathy in the audience and make the film appear to be more realistic.

4. Sound Effects
Underworld: Blood Wars 2017
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y74du0Ex_g

'Underworld: Blood Wars' includes both diegetic and non-diegetic sound effects. At 0.03 there is diegetic sound effects of the soldiers preparing guns. The 'roar' heard at 0.17 is an example of emphatic sound as we have viewed previously that there are creatures in the trailer that would be responsible for making such noises however at that specific moment in  the trailer there was no creature sown to be making the noise and so it would therefore be non-diegetic sound. These sound effects are used to reinforce the genre of the film which appears to be Fantasy/Action. They are also used to provoke feelings of excitement and tension in the audience.

5. Music
The Intern 2015

'The Intern' includes upbeat music which fits in with the Comedy genre. There are pauses in the music in order for specific spoken language to be heard more prominently for comedic effect, this is especially highlighted at 0.07 in the trailer.
